The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is actively promoting attention to soil health. France also stressed the importance of farming transformation and agricultural land conservation in response to the global warming crisis at the 2015 Paris Climate Summit.
What is the serious crisis facing the soil? Half of the world’s soil is already degraded, which not only reduces the productivity of agricultural land and endangers food production, but also affects the soil’s ability to regulate climate, circulate fresh water and maintain biodiversity. Soil may be inconspicuous, but it is very important to us.
We invited a local organization “The Mushroom Initiative” to explain the crisis that soil is facing, the causes of land degradation, what makes a healthy soil, and how we can restore the soil to make the best use of the natural system to cope with the climate crisis.
Founded in 2008, the Mushroom Initiative is a non-profit organization that practices soil conservation in Tai Po farms, actively promotes land restoration, shares soil knowledge, promotes concern for soil health, responds to environmental issues with a positive attitude, and spreads the concept of coexistence with nature.
