Migrant domestic helpers are a group crucial to environmental issues in Hong Kong, yet often marginalized. This project aims to explore promoting plastic and waste reduction among helper sisters, examining their environmental experiences and perspectives. Recognizing their key position, we used a social innovation framework to collaborate with helpers and university students in investigating existing environmental practices and identifying the factors creating barriers. Through activities such as beach clean-ups, design thinking workshops, and community environmental communications, it was discovered that, alongside the influence of employer habits, migrant domestic helpers\u2019’ cross-cultural living experiences similarly shape their environmental awareness and actions. Their quiet contributions to the environment really need societal recognition. However, language barriers limit migrant domestic helpers\u2019 access to information channels like localized waste management policies. The challenge remains in connecting their environmental awareness to local practices. One outcome of this project is the practical trilingual Plastic-Free Helper’s Guidebook (in Tagalog, Bahasa, and English), designed to help overcome existing barriers and enhance migrant domestic helpers\u2019 capacity for daily plastic and waste reduction. Beyond the guidebook, this project uses plastic reduction as a common topic to demonstrate the intersection between social inclusion and environmental issues, fostering cross-cultural understanding between students and migrant domestic helpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\u7576\u6211\u5011\u8ac7\u8ad6\u300c\u74b0\u4fdd\u300d\u8207\u300c\u53ef\u6301\u7e8c\u751f\u6d3b\u300d\u6642\uff0c\u5e38\u88ab\u8996\u70ba\u4e00\u7a2e\u6559\u689d\u5f0f\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u6216\u9700\u8981\u9ad8\u79d1\u6280\u89e3\u6c7a\u7684\u8907\u96dc\u554f\u984c\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u74b0\u5883\u554f\u984c\u4e26\u975e\u50c5\u9760\u653f\u7b56\u6216\u6280\u8853\u5c31\u80fd\u89e3\u6c7a\u7684\u7cbe\u82f1\u8b70\u984c\u3002\u4ee5\u5373\u68c4\u5851\u81a0\u5305\u88dd\u70ba\u4f8b\uff0c\u5b83\u81f3\u4eca\u4ecd\u662f\u9999\u6e2f\u90fd\u5e02\u56fa\u9ad4\u5ee2\u7269\u4e2d\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u6311\u6230\u3002\u96d6\u7136\u793e\u6703\u5df2\u6709\u8a31\u591a\u6e1b\u5ee2\u52aa\u529b\uff0c\u5f9e\u6559\u80b2\u3001\u793e\u5340\u6d3b\u52d5\u5230\u653f\u7b56\u63a8\u52d5\uff0c\u4f46\u95dc\u9375\u5728\u65bc\u2014\u2014\u5982\u4f55\u8b93\u5927\u773e\u771f\u6b63\u7406\u89e3\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u4e26\u9010\u6b65\u8f49\u5316\u70ba\u65e5\u5e38\u884c\u52d5\uff1f\n

\n\u6211\u5011\u5617\u8a66\u4ee5\u793e\u6703\u5275\u65b0\u63a8\u52d5\u74b0\u4fdd\u5be6\u8e10\uff0c\u900f\u904e\u8de8\u9818\u57df\u3001\u8de8\u793e\u7fa4\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u7d50\u5408\u79d1\u6280\u3001\u793e\u6703\u8a2d\u8a08\u8207\u4eba\u6587\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u95dc\u6ce8\u5851\u81a0\u6c61\u67d3\u80cc\u5f8c\u7684\u7d50\u69cb\u6027\u554f\u984c\uff1a\u8ab0\u5728\u627f\u53d7\u74b0\u5883\u4ee3\u50f9\uff1f\u54ea\u4e9b\u8072\u97f3\u88ab\u5ffd\u7565\uff1f\u6211\u5011\u8a8d\u70ba\uff0c\u552f\u6709\u5f9e\u771f\u5be6\u751f\u6d3b\u7d93\u9a57\u51fa\u767c\uff0c\u8207\u793e\u5340\u5171\u540c\u5c0b\u627e\u89e3\u6c7a\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u74b0\u4fdd\u624d\u80fd\u4e0d\u518d\u662f\u9059\u4e0d\u53ef\u53ca\u7684\u7406\u60f3\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5be6\u969b\u53ef\u884c\u7684\u6539\u8b8a\u3002\n

\n\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u9805\u9700\u8981\u5168\u6c11\u53c3\u8207\u7684\u9577\u671f\u884c\u52d5\u2014\u2014\u800c\u5b83\u7684\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u6b63\u4f86\u81ea\u793e\u5340\u5167\u7684\u6bcf\u500b\u5fae\u5c0f\u5275\u65b0\u3002\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\nWhen we talk about \u201cenvironmental protection\u201d and \u201csustainable living,\u201d it is often perceived as a dogmatic lifestyle or a complex problem that requires high-tech solutions. However, environmental issues are not elite concerns that can be resolved solely through policy or technology. Take single-use plastic packaging as an example\u2014it remains a major challenge in Hong Kong\u2019s municipal solid waste. Despite numerous waste-reduction efforts in society, from education and community activities to policy initiatives, the key question remains: how can we help the public truly understand the problem and gradually turn that understanding into daily action?\n

\nWe try to promote environmental practices through social innovation, adopting a cross-disciplinary and cross-community approach that integrates technology, social design, and humanistic thinking. At the same time, we pay attention to the structural issues behind plastic pollution: Who bears the environmental cost? Whose voices are being ignored? We believe that only by starting from real-life experiences and working together with communities to find solutions can environmental protection move from a distant ideal to tangible, achievable change.\n

\nThis is a long-term effort that requires participation from everyone\u2014and its power lies in every small innovation within the community.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\u5de5\u4f5c\u574a\u4e0d\u50c5\u8457\u773c\u65bc\u6d77\u7058\u6e05\u7406\u7684\u6210\u679c\uff0c\u66f4\u5e0c\u671b\u4fc3\u9032\u53c3\u52a0\u8005\u601d\u8003\u5851\u81a0\u3001\u6d77\u6d0b\u5783\u573e\u3001\u90fd\u5e02\u5ee2\u7269\u8207\u500b\u4eba\/\u96c6\u9ad4\u8cac\u4efb\u95dc\u806f\u7684\u5c0d\u8a71\u3002\u6d3b\u52d5\u6700\u5f8c\u7531\u6d77\u5ee2\u85dd\u8853\u5de5\u4f5c\u574a\u4f5c\u7d50\uff0c\u904b\u7528\u6536\u96c6\u5230\u7684\u6d77\u73bb\u7483\u8207\u5176\u4ed6\u6d77\u6d0b\u5ee2\u68c4\u7269\u88fd\u4f5c\u85dd\u8853\u54c1\uff0c\u4ee5\u6b64\u5f15\u767c\u53c3\u8207\u8005\u53cd\u601d\u3002\n

\n\u9019\u4e9b\u85dd\u8853\u4f5c\u54c1\u9023\u540c\u6d77\u73bb\u7483\u5275\u4f5c\u7686\u8d08\u4e88\u53c3\u8207\u8005\uff0c\u65e2\u8c61\u5fb5\u8457\u8207\u6b64\u6b21\u7d93\u6b77\u7684\u6301\u4e45\u9023\u7d50\uff0c\u4e5f\u4ee3\u8868\u8457\u5c0d\u74b0\u5883\u5b88\u8b77\u7684\u65b0\u627f\u8afe\u3002\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To kick off the project, CSIS organized a beach clean-up workshop in Pak Kok Village (\u5317\u89d2\u6751) in collaboration with Living Lamma (\u6d3b\u5728\u5357\u4e2b), Mission for Migrant Workers (\u5916\u52de\u4e8b\u5de5\u4e2d\u5fc3), and Share Hong Kong. The event brought together 39 participants from the Philippines, Mainland China, and Hong Kong, fostering a valuable opportunity for cross-cultural interaction centred on the shared environmental experience.\n

\nBeyond the immediate task of beach cleaning, the workshop aimed to facilitate dialogue around the origins of the plastic, marine waste, municipal waste and its connection to our individual and collective responsibilities. Living Lamma led a concluding art workshop, utilizing collected sea glass and other marine waste to create art pieces that served as prompts for reflection.\n

\nThese artworks, along with the sea glass art pieces, were gifted to the participants, symbolizing a lasting connection to the experience and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\nI asked my domestic helper group mates to share their experience in their bosses\u2019 home. They told us that they do lots of sorting jobs at home, but their bosses don’t care about that.\n

\nAnd their building has just like a three-colour recycling bins. They could not actually sort the things with different categories. So they feel sad actually.\n

\nToday we have the experience, we have the chance together, our students know the feelings from domestic helpers and actually we can do something. Now we know that the policy (waste charging) is coming in the coming April. If we have domestic helpers at home or not, what we can do for them? We can think about that after today\u2019s activity.\n<\/p>\n

\nWe really enjoyed today. It was a very useful day with good weather. We talked about our community and how we felt. Today was meaningful because we picked up rubbish from the sea over there.\n

\nThe most useful and exciting part was the DIY activity. This art work project was made from glass waste from the sea, right?\n

\nWe really enjoyed it\u2014my group had a great time too. There was teamwork, communication, and we made new friends today\u2014not just with fellow domestic helpers, but also with local Chinese people. Thank you for today; we truly enjoyed it a lot.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
