Social Sculpture<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Think about it: can a sculpture only be an object that stands in the center of a roundabout, or in the lobby of a museum? Can it only commemorate a historical figure, or a day on the calendar? Can we imagine a sculpture that responds to society and creates a statue for an issue we care about? Such a sculpture is no longer just an object.

<\/span>Disposable culture has unfortunately become part of our daily life, not only bringing serious plastic pollution to our society, but also causing irreversible damage to the ecology. When active citizens are at the beach, they often find disposable masks, lunch boxes, Styrofoam, food wrappers, and plastic bags, many of which are washed into the ocean and then washed ashore. We hope to imagine our relationship with society by using the trash that we pick up at the seaside, the objects that once gave us convenience. With these social debris, we create a sculpture that responds to ourselves and to society. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In 2023 February, our centre held a beach clean-up activity with the Centre for Cultural Studies, CUHK. There are many beach clean-up activities held by various NGOs and individuals in Hong Kong. We are facing a serious plastic pollution problem over the world. In fact, the one-day beach clean-up activity only resolves a minor part of the problem. How to map the specific localized visible problems to an overall big picture of the plastic pollution problem?

We had invited a beach clean-up professional and a community artist to the event. Participants used the waste collected on the seashores as resources and reimagine their relationship between the environment and society by co-creation of social sculpture. Through the experience of the beach clean-up session and the process of co-creation of social sculpture with the participants, we brought up the reflection on plastic pollution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Michael is an artist\/designer, researcher and university lecturer. Born in London and moved to Hong Kong in 2009, he has engaged in a diverse range of creative work, from working as a street vendor to participating in urban farming projects, from writing fiction to social practice.

\u6881\u5fd7\u525b\uff1a\u85dd\u8853\u5bb6\uff0f\u8a2d\u8a08\u5e2b\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u54e1\u548c\u5927\u5b78\u8b1b\u5e2b\u3002\u51fa\u751f\u65bc\u502b\u6566\uff0c2009\u5e74\u79fb\u5c45\u9999\u6e2f\uff0c\u4ed6\u5f9e\u4e8b\u7684\u5275\u4f5c\u5341\u5206\u591a\u6a23\uff0c\u5f9e\u7576\u8857\u5dff\u5c0f\u8ca9\u5230\u53c3\u8207\u57ce\u5dff\u8fb2\u8015\u8a08\u5283\uff0c\u5f9e\u5beb\u5c0f\u8aaa\u5230\u793e\u6703\u5be6\u8e10\u3002\u6881\u5fd7\u525b\u662f\u300c\u64da\u9ede\u3002\u53e5\u9ede\u300d\u548c\u300c\u679c\u908a\u300d\u7684\u4e00\u4efd\u5b50\uff0c\u800c\u5f8c\u8005\u662f\u5171\u4eab\u5370\u5237\u7684\u4e00\u4efd\u5b50\u3002(\u6881\u5fd7\u525b\u77ed\u7bc7\u5c0f\u8aaa: \u5851\u81a0\u7058)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5927\u4fbf\u59b9<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Yeungs has stayed in Taiwan to participate in marine environmental education and research on marine waste pollution. His favorite marine animal is whale shark, and he has participated in whale shark research in the Marine Conservation Philippines.

<\/span>She is deeply interested in the hermit crabs in Hong Kong and is working hard to document the species of hermit crabs in Hong Kong. She has returned to Hong Kong in recent years and now works as an environmental educator. In her spare time, she actively shares information about the ocean and environmental protection on online platforms. I hope to bring people closer to the ocean, so that more people can learn more about the ocean, understand it and protect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results collected in the clean-up were recorded by ‘My Nature Diary’ project.<\/a> ‘My Nature Diary’ combines beach \/ mountain cleanup, citizen science and environmental education. Through every cleanup event, participants can learn about the concrete issues of marine and mountain debris. The project was initiated by students of the Master of Science in Environmental Management at the University of Hong Kong for project and academic purposes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u54c1\u724c\u7d00\u9304\u8abf\u67e5\u662f\u6de8\u7058\u6d3b\u52d5\u4e2d\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u4e00\u74b0\uff0c\u78ba\u4fdd\u6de8\u7058\u7684\u5f8c\u7e8c\u9577\u6548\u5f71\u97ff\uff0c\u4e26\u63a8\u52d5\u4f01\u696d\u505a\u51fa\u8f49\u8b8a\u884c\u52d5\u3002\u6b64\u6b21\u6de8\u7058\u6536\u96c6\u6700\u591a\u7684\u9805\u76ee\u90fd\u4f86\u81ea\u9910\u98f2\u5783\u573e\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u4ee5\u7dad\u4ed6\u3001\u53ef\u53e3\u53ef\u6a02\u3001Watson\u7b49\u54c1\u724c\u7522\u54c1\u70ba\u4e3b\uff0c\u53ef\u898b\u8a72\u985e\u54c1\u724c\u7684\u4e3b\u5c0e\uff0c\u4ea6\u9700\u8981\u793e\u6703\u63a8\u52d5\u4f01\u696d\u8c4e\u7acb\u8cac\u4efb\u3002

The brand survey is an important part of the beach cleanup campaign to ensure the long-term impact of the cleanup and to motivate companies to make changes. The largest number of items collected at the beach were from food and beverage waste, with brands such as Vita, Coca-Cola, Watson outnumbered others. It shows that these brands are leading the way in marine pollution and that the whole social community needs to promote corporate responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Clock<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the helipad, Jules team first built a no-smoking sign with plastic bottles with a sense of activism. During the collective art-making, we expanded the circle further, with the wasted plastic barrels enclosing the middle slash, leaving the rest of the space to be filled with other waste. At this point, artist Michael’s drone captured a panoramic view of the helipad from above which shaped like a giant concentric clock. We further had our bodies be part of this art. We divided 12 of the 17 people to play the human clock; 3 to play the minute hand and 2 to play the hour hand; the drone filmed the walking of the hour hand going around the circle. Each time the hour hand went, the waste under our feet would be moved out by other teammates. Finally, as it started to drizzle, the work ended with us waving our hands together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
